In a recent Trip Report by a BASK member who was circumnavigating Lake Tahoe, he reported that he camped just below Secret Beach (just below Sand Harbor). This is illegal. No camping is permitted north of Zypher Cove. If he had been caught by either the Carson or Washoe County Sheriffs or U.S. Rangers, he would have been asked to leave, regardless of the weather or the circumstances. There are no campsites on the Nevada (east) side of Lake Tahoe between Zephyr Cove and Tahoe City (on the north shore), a distance of about 35 miles, or almost one-half of Lake Tahoe's 72 mile shoreline. This land is controlled by the U.S. Forest Service. A minimum of two campsites are needed on the east and north shores, within this 35 mile stretch.
Last year a committee was formed to try to establish The Lake Tahoe Water Trail (www.laketahoewatertrail.org).
Check out their website and, if you are interested, enquire directly to them to learn if there are opportunites for Bay Area sea kayakers to help with this effort. Please email the BASK webmaster if you learn anything new.
