Bay Currents - the BASK newsletter

About Bay Currents

Bay Currents is the monthly newsletter of BASK. It contains club news and trip announcements, along with articles about sea kayaking in the Bay Area and beyond.

Every month, one of our volunteer editors puts together a new Bay Currents using desktop publishing tools. The newsletter is installed in the Members-Only section of our website in electronic form, and a link to this document is emailed to all members who have requested email notification (to read the newsletter, you just click the link).

We maintain an archive of past issues of Bay Currents in the Members-Only section of our website. Issues from April 1986 through the current month are available to all BASK members.

Accessing Bay Currents Online

Bay Currents is kept on our website in PDF form. PDF ("Portable "Document "Format") has become the standard format for documents on the web - it's used for everything from academic papers to product manuals, even kayak club newsletters. It allows us to offer high quality typesetting, plus full color graphics and photos.

To read Bay Currents on your computer, you'll need a PDF reader. Nowadays most computers come with Adobe Acrobat Reader pre-installed, but if you're not sure about it, you can try this test:

If you had any trouble with that, you can get the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader here as a free download: Get Adobe Acrobat

Just follow the instructions on the Get Acrobat page to install the version that's right for you computer. After the installation is complete, try the Bay Currents sample PDF again. If it works, you're ready to access the newsletter!

You can read Bay Currents online as follows (each requires a BASK Members-Only password):

  • If you've checked the Bay Currents email checkbox on your membership application ("Notify me by email every month as soon as the new Bay Currents becomes available on the web site"), you'll receive email every month when the newsletter is ready. Just click the link in the email to read the newsletter.
  • Go to the Bay Currents Archives page in the Members-Only section of the website. There you'll see a list of the available Bay Currents issues, including the current one. Just click one of the links to read that issue.

A short while after clicking one of these links (depending on your internet connection speed), your PDF reader will start up, displaying the newsletter. You can read it right then, you can print it out on your printer, or you can save a copy to your hard drive.
