Coronavirus Update: How BASK is Responding

Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, most BASK members who ordinarily initiate club paddles are not doing so at present. The club is also not holding the clinics, practice sessions, and New Member Paddles that we ordinarily schedule.

We recognize that this situation is frustrating for many newer members. You may not have family or trusted friends with whom to paddle privately. Much of the Bay is not safe to paddle alone, and rescues in the event of a capsize may require close person-to-person contact.

We look forward to paddling with you! In the meantime, we encourage you to participate in the club’s online activities, which are listed on the Calendar in the Members Only section of the BASK website. You can also sign up for Buzz, the club’s email list; you will find it under Resources in the Members Only section of the BASK website. Both are good ways to get to know members.

At present, most BASK members are paddling privately with friends rather than initiating club paddles. Buzz can be used to find paddling partners, but private paddles should be arranged back-channel. (A paddle posted on Buzz counts as a club paddle and requires a trip waiver.) Club members are encouraged to prioritize safety and to heed health guidelines and local ordinances.

Finally, the Bay Area has many superb kayaking outfitters and instructors who may be equipped to follow health ordinances and get you on the water. Check them out!
