  • Featured Presentation: “Piloting Ships in San Francisco Bay” by Bar Pilot Jesse Pullin

Questions: Tom Colton, BASK President, tcolton@berkeley.edu

Presentation Description: We’ll hear what it’s like to board a big ship at sea and pilot it into the bay to the various ports. We’ll learn how to communicate with the pilot, where the blind spots and danger areas of the bay are, and how to read the online pilot dispatch sheet to know when ships are coming and going. Jesse Pulling rew up in Sebastopol, California and spent summers in Ketchikan, Alaska where his father was a sea pilot. After graduating from the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, he went to work on oil tankers in Alaska, cargo ships in Northern Europe, and government surveillance ships in Southeast Asia. He returned to the Bay Area in 2008 and started working on harbor tugs. In 2017 he joined the SF Bar Pilots.
